On 11 April 2018 China Matters held its Fourth Young Professionals Debate featuring one young professional and one special guest on each debate team.

The two teams debated the question:

‘Is Australia’s China narrative sensationalist and shortsighted?’

Team 1 on the affirmative: Martine Letts and Philip Le Liu

Team 2 on the negative: Allan Gyngell and Ellen Egan

Moderated by: James Scullin

The evening saw a lively discussion between panellists and the audience, debating how Australia’s China narrative had been playing out discussing the different viewpoints of academics, various media outlets and policy makers.

Allan Gyngell and Ellen Egan on the negative team were voted by the audience as the winning team for putting forward the most convincing argument.
